History of the Unity Labour Party (ULP) — a political movement built by the people, for the people, dedicated to uplifting and modernizing Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The ULP was officially formed on October 16, 1994, out of a historic merger between the Saint Vincent Labour Party and the Movement for National Unity (MNU) — born from a shared vision to unite progressive forces under a single banner and build a more equitable society.
Guided by the philosophy of advanced social democracy and progressive ideals, our core belief is simple: governance must be people-centered. We believe in building a modern, competitive, post-colonial economy while fiercely protecting social safety nets, regional integration, and the deep-rooted dignity of our Caribbean civilization.
After establishing deep roots with the Vincentian electorate, the ULP was elected to government on March 28, 2001, under the leadership of Dr. Ralph Gonsalves (“Comrade Ralph”).
What followed was a historic era of political stability and transformation. The ULP went on to secure a record five consecutive election victories (2001, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020), steering the nation through major global economic shifts, volcanic eruptions, and climate challenges with resilience and vision. Following the 2025 elections, the ULP transitioned to a vital opposition role in the House of Assembly, continuing to defend the interests of everyday citizens.
Over more than two decades of progressive leadership, the ULP completely reshaped the socio-economic landscape of SVG. Key pillars of our legacy include:
The journey of the Unity Labour Party does not pause. As we look ahead, our focus is on renewal, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. We are actively mentoring the next generation of progressive leaders to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our ongoing blueprint focuses on building a climate-resilient economy, championing renewable energy, expanding the digital sector, and ensuring that the wealth of our nation is always shared justly among its people.
Always ULP for SVG: We remain steadfast in our mission to protect our democracy, uplift the working class, and ensure a prosperous, sovereign future for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
